For all of you who don’t know Lewis’s story, here’s a little bit of his background.

Darling Lewis lives with us here on the farm in the Hollow. He is a rescue Goose.

Lewis came to us through fate. I believe he was destined to live on our little farm.

At the crack of dawn one summer day, I woke to my partner tapping on my bedroom window. Half asleep, I rose and sleepily wandered out to him. As he took off for work he said, “There’s something in the aviary for you. Bye!”

Intrigued, I headed straight over to the aviary to find this darling boy, covered in blood. He had been dumped down the end of our street and had obviously had a rough night. He was frightened and injured.

I had zero experience with geese, and this boy was huge! I ran inside, grabbed a bowl of warm water, a few clothes and a little stool.

I approached the poor beautiful creature, who was obviously exhausted and scared. I proceeded to bathe him whilst talking to him in calm low tones. He became more at ease, as if he knew he was now safe. I wrapped a sheet around him to keep him warm, gave him food and water, and let him settle in.

Then I googled ‘How to look after a goose’, reading to him in a play-school-toned voice, trying to sound warm and inviting. He watched me with intrigue, while all of the chickens and guinea fowl gathered around the aviary and watched him, curious as to who this new creature was on their farm.

A few days later we let him out to free range on the farm, and he settled in beautifully with everyone.

Lewis now has many little ‘grand chickens’ that he loves dearly and protects, sometimes a little too much! He’s best mates with our rescue rooster Hook, and he roams with the guinea fowl throughout the paddocks. Lewis is patriarch and protector of all our farm babies; a guard goose and generally just a beautiful soul. He is very noisy and bossy, but we love him for his outgoing nature.

It always makes me sad to think that someone dumped him. But now, I think he is exactly where he is meant to be. And I also think he is amazingly deserving of the extravagant floral crown he adorns in the LEWIS print I have created.
